Mechanical systems info: The cabins are primarily powered by wood and propane. The Ecoflo system is used for sewage treatment and management at the lodge. There are outhouses in various locations—one of the most environmentally friendly ways of dealing with human waste products.
Electrical systems info: All of the buildings are off-grid. The lodge is powered by solar, propane, and wood energy. The solar system was designed by Quantum Renewable Energy.
Other green features: The cabins were built with hand tools, incorporating many recycled and reclaimed materials. Recycled materials include hardware, windows, and glass bottles. Reclaimed materials, such as 19th century architectural salvage—slate, beams, posts, doors, windows—are used throughout the cabins. Natural materials found on the Wintergreen site, such as stone, wood, and earth are also used.
Anything else you'd like to share?: Wintergreen Studios is a year-round education and retreat centre in the Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve in Southeastern Ontario. We offer a variety of short courses in the fine and domestic arts, as well as retreat and meeting facilities for individuals and groups. Guests at Wintergreen have access to a network of over twenty trails for self-guided hikes through the 204-acre property. The land features mixed forests and meadows, granite outcroppings, ponds, marshes, and a glacier carved lake. It is home to a wide range of plant life and wildlife. There is a floating bridge to a private island on the lake, where guests can enjoy a picnic and swim.
